OpenTalk Moderation Transparency Report Q2 2026

OpenTalk is committing to quarterly transparency reports about how we moderate the platform. This is the first official report, covering Q2 2026. We publish this data to set a new standard for accountability in random video chat—a category historically opaque about safety decisions.

Violations by Category
Explicit/NSFW Content: 234,892 reports (48%)
Most common violation. Breakdown:
- Unsolicited explicit video exposure — 156,000 reports (67%)
- Solicitation for sexual acts — 48,000 reports (20%)
- Explicit language/solicitation in text chat — 30,892 reports (13%)
Action taken: First offense = 24-hour temp ban + warning. Second = 7-day ban. Third+ = permanent ban. 98.2% of permanent bans in this category are for repeat offenders.
Minors / Child Safety: 89,234 reports (18%)
Second-highest violation category. Breakdown:
- Suspected minor in adult chat mode — 52,000 reports (58%)
- Adult soliciting minor — 31,000 reports (35%)
- Minor being groomed (by behavior patterns) — 6,234 reports (7%)
Action taken: 100% of adult-soliciting-minor cases → permanent ban + escalation to NCMEC (National Center for Missing & Exploited Children). Minors in adult mode → soft warning + redirect to age-appropriate product when available.
Harassment / Hate Speech: 87,391 reports (18%)
Includes racist slurs, transphobic language, threats.
- Slurs / hate language — 54,000 reports (62%)
- Threats of violence — 21,000 reports (24%)
- Targeted harassment / bullying — 12,391 reports (14%)
Action taken: Context-dependent. First-time slur = warning + education (link to our hate-free policy). Threats = permanent ban immediately. Repeat = escalation.
Bots / Fake Accounts: 48,299 reports (10%)
Automated spam, commercial solicitation, phishing links.
Action taken: 100% permanent ban + IP block for 90 days. No appeal process (these are caught via bot-detection heuristics with 99.7% accuracy).
Other (Copyright, spam links, impersonation): 27,576 reports (6%)
False Positives & Appeals
We maintain a 0.8% false positive rate for permanent bans. Of the 147 cases overturned in Q2:
- 92 were incorrectly flagged as minors (false age detection) — now fixed in v2.3
- 31 were appeals by users who argued context was misunderstood (e.g., friend quoting slur in jest)
- 24 were system errors (duplicate bans, expiration mismatches)
We're committed to lowering this further through model retraining and human review on close cases.
Response Times
Automated detections (bots, explicit video frames, known phishing links):
- Median: <1 second
- Action: Immediate temporary disconnect + warning
User-reported violations (requiring human judgment):
- Median: 8.2 minutes
- 95th percentile: 28 minutes
- Reasons for delays: timezone (if report filed outside peak mod hours), complexity of context
Appeals Process
Users can appeal any ban via our support portal. In Q2:
- 7,000 appeals filed
- 147 successful (2.1%)
- Average resolution: 18 hours
Most appeals are from users who believe they were misidentified or contexts misunderstood. We're improving explainability—each ban now includes a brief reason + appeal link.
Systemic Improvements Made in Q2
- Age Detection v2.3 — Reduced false minors flagging from 2.1% to 0.4% via improved audio/facial models
- Context Windows for Moderators — Humans now see 30-second clip pre/post-report (was 5 seconds), reducing misunderstandings
- Hate Speech Classifier Retraining — Added 50k+ examples of context-dependent speech to reduce false positives on reclaimed language
- CSAM Detection Upgrade — Implemented PhotoDNA library for known-abuse imagery (zero tolerance, immediate law enforcement escalation)
Looking Ahead: Q3 2026 Goals
- Reduce false positive rate to <0.5%< /li>
- Improve response time to <5 minutes median on user reports
- Implement automated appeals triage (AI recommends "grant" or "deny" for human moderators)
- Launch public moderation appeal tracker (real-time view of cases in process)
